WELCOME TO STRONTIUM FOR BONES BLOG

Have you experienced negative, and even dangerous, side effects from Fosamax (alendronate), Boniva (ibandronate), Actonel (risedronate), Reclast (zoledronic acid), Prolia (denosumab), Forteo (teriparatide), Tymlos (abaloparatide), or other drugs prescribed for osteoporosis? If you have, then rest assured there is a safe, effective treatment for this condition. Strontium, primarily in the form of strontium citrate, is taken orally once a day.

Alternative Medicine For Osteoporosis

Strontium citrate is an excellent alternative medicine for osteoporosis treatment. Instead of poisoning your body with drugs such as Fosamax, take strontium, a naturally occurring mineral present in water, food, and the human skeleton in trace amounts. Studies show that strontium promotes bone formation and decreases bone resorption (loss), leading to higher bone density.

I'm a family doc in Texas. Been trying strontium citrate with a few of my patients who won't take Fosamax or anything else. Hope to see some results of DexaScans soon. Enjoyed the info on your blog. Nice to see a blog that isn't selling me something.

I do not know the pH of strontium citrate and I don't know why it is of concern to you. However, if Doctor's Best, the distributor of Strontium Bone Maker, replies to my request for this information, I will post it on my blog.

Has anyone had reactions to Strontium Citrate? I've been on it 6 months and am wondering if a recent stomach problems could be from that? Thanks for any info re side effects.

Response to question of October 24, 2008:

When I first started taking strontium citrate, I had mild constipation, which I corrected by boosting the fiber content of my cereal. According to www.healthlibrary.epnet.com, "When taken in recommended doses, strontium supplements appear to be safe and usually free of side effects other than occasional mild gastrointestinal upset, including diarrhea." Other possible safety issues are given, but gastrointestinal upset is the most common problem.

FYI medical personnel and osteoporosis patients....DO NOT take Fosomax or Boniva if you are planning to have dental work done, such as tooth extractions. I had bad teeth & needed dentures, but had 13 teeth to be extracted. The Big 10 dental school, including professors, stated they would NOT perform the extractions if I had taken either of these drugs. I had taken just 2 or 3 tablets of Fosomax some 6 or 8 months earlier, then stopped, and fortunately I was able to talk them into the extractions. Excess bleeding is the problem...they said they might not be able to stop the bleeding. They also said these drugs do not strengthen bones, they merely seal them up with a coating which prevents disposal of dead bone tissue and prevents growth of replacement bone cells.

Thank you for sharing your experience with tooth extractions following Fosamax treatment. Some dentists are hesitant to perform extractions and other procedures on patients taking bisphosphonates. Although excess bleeding is not a problem associated with these drugs, there are other serious potential problems.

The following is from www.askyourdentist.com/dental-topics/bisphosphonates-and-tooth-extractions/

"Bisphosphonates target and kill the bone cells (Osteoclasts) that break down the old bone matrix, preventing the Osteoporosis process. At the same time, it has been noted that people treated with Bisphosphonates may suffer from Osteonecrosis in the jaw bone. Osteonecrosis means bone death. This condition has been shown to happen spontaneously but also in connection with tooth extractions or other invasive dental surgery. The bisphosphonates seems to slow the bone healing process after tooth extractions leading to serious bone inflammation (Osteomyelitis), infections and exposed bone with associated pain."

Medicines given to me by doctors for Osteperosis, Athrytus, like; Ibprofen, mussle relaxers, pain killers, all contibuted to then high blood pressure. Then blood pressure medicine on top of it all, caused acid reflux. The acid reflux meds, along with others made my eye disease (vision) Now worse. In addition; I have polups found on my voice box, caused by the acid reflux. I have severe alergic reactions to over 12meds, and antibiotics. Recent blood work showed my ammune system very poor, blood disorger and Epstein Barr. I wonder if Medical Field, Pharmacutical Companies and the Government care about the people, or are they all in it for the MONEY. Listen to Medicine Ads on TV Commercials. Other Countries have less Cancer and recognize medicines in the USA as Poison. I need alternative to Fosamax which was recently prescribed to me,and I through it out, due to all the negetive news and reports on it. Now I am being given Steroid Med (Medrol)for Inflamation in my Throat (polips) needing removed and possible "cancer",along with the prescribed "Prilosec" for Heartburn. What's going to happen NEXT..if my immune system is low, eye disease (vision) worse and bones brittle?? I am only 56 y.o. and Not One Doctor suggested the Natural Herbs or blood work to see vitamine/mineral deficiency. By the way, most antibiotics and medicines destroy our vitamin and mineral needed in the body. Where do we turn, who do we go to, Especially, if you don't have the income for healthy foods, natural or alternative medicine and the suppliments you need...? Is our Government trying to lessen the population, with allowing these dangereous drugs on the market?

I am sorry to hear you have had such a rough time with a variety of drugs for different conditions. You will generally not hear about natural remedies from medical doctors because they are not trained to give such advice. Naturopaths treat disease by using food, exercise, heat, etc. that assist the natural healing processes.

Hi Bone Lady! I'm a 29 year old, recently diagnosed with osteoporosis. Nothing that runs in my family and I'm healthy, does not smoke, drink alcohol. But i´ve been depressed for several years before(high cortisol..) and probably got boneloss from that. Anyhow, I live in Sweden and I would like to know where i can get Strontium. They don't sell it in stores here, so can I buy it on the internet? If so, I'd be glad if you can recommend me a safe and trustworthy shop. Best wishes, Malin

Malin, I buy Doctor's Best Strontium Bone Maker from www.iherb.com. They mail internationally and are reliable. I did not get your comment until today because of some technical problem. Best regards, BoneLady

Hi came across your blog while searching about strontium citrate.
My mom (75 yro) got diabetic and she got osteoporosis, just found out last year after she fell.
she got compression fracture on her spine. She use forteo for almost 6 months but her condition not improve at all and more worse as she got leg pain and diarrhea. My mom leg already weak cause of diabetic and 4 years ago injured her heel even though it healed. both her leg more weak... so after all of that now she got compression fracture and now she totally in bed rest. I have stop her forteo injection this few days as I notice her side effects from injection more worse recently. I have bought docter's best strontium but haven't give it to her.

Do I need to let her try strontium right away or wait more days until her side effect from forteo better?

Best Regards, Rita

Rita Tang,

Osteoporosis is sometimes a complication of diabetes. I’m so sorry to hear about your mom’s health problems and side effects from Forteo. However, diarrhea and leg cramps, although disagreeable, are considered less serious side effects of Forteo. http://www.rxlist.com/forteo-side-effects-drug-center.htm

You don’t have to wait until your mom’s side effects from Forteo have diminished before giving her strontium citrate. It’s really up to you and her. In my case, I waited one month after Fosamax before starting strontium citrate, although the negative side effects I was experiencing with Fosamax disappeared within a week of discontinuing the drug.

Make sure your mom is getting sufficient calcium (1200 mg/day) from her diet and/or supplements. Strontium is best absorbed on an empty stomach and at least three hours away from food, calcium or magnesium supplements, or antacids. I take my strontium at night just before bedtime.

You might want to give your mom a good multivitamin to ensure she gets enough magnesium and other nutrients. I take Nature Made Multi for Him (that’s right, for Him) because it contains no iron (most people over age 50 don’t need iron) and is USP verified (so you know what you’re getting).

Your mom should definitely have her 25(OH) vitamin D blood level taken, if she has not had it done already. Anyone who fractures should have this test. If the results show that she has a vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency, she will need to take sufficient vitamin D to boost her levels up. Do not skip this step. Many people who fracture have low vitamin D levels.

I wish you both all the best. Write again soon and let me know how your mom is doing.

How Strontium Builds Bones

Strontium is a mineral that tends to accumulate in bone. Studies have shown that oral doses of strontium are a safe and effective way to prevent and reverse osteoporosis. Doses of 680 mg per day appear to be optimal. See my "For More Information About Strontium" links section.

Osteoporosis is caused by changes in bone production. In healthy young bones there is a constant cycle of new bone growth and bone removal. With age, more bone is removed and less new bone is produced. The bones become less dense and thus more fragile.

Scientists believe that strontium works in two ways. It may stimulate the replication of pre-osteoblasts, leading to an increase in osteoblasts (cells that build bone). Strontium also directly inhibits the activity of osteoclasts (cells that break down bone). The result is stronger bones.

When taking strontium, be sure to take 1200 mg calcium, 1000 IU vitamin D3, and 500 mg magnesium daily. It is best to take strontium late at night on an empty stomach. Calcium and strontium may compete with each other for absorption if taken together.
