WELCOME TO STRONTIUM FOR BONES BLOG

Have you experienced negative, and even dangerous, side effects from Fosamax (alendronate), Boniva (ibandronate), Actonel (risedronate), Reclast (zoledronic acid), Prolia (denosumab), Forteo (teriparatide), Tymlos (abaloparatide), or other drugs prescribed for osteoporosis? If you have, then rest assured there is a safe, effective treatment for this condition. Strontium, primarily in the form of strontium citrate, is taken orally once a day.

Sites Providing REMS Echolight Scans in USA

Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry (REMS) Echolight is a new, radiation-free technology for assessing bone density and quality at the lumbar spine and femoral neck. US headquarters are located at 509 Madison Ave, RM 1510, New York, New York 10022. Currently, there are 10 sites offering the scans in the USA.

Would you speak to hip fractures and if Strontium prevents hip fractures significantly in especially older women.

To Anonymous of 3/25/2024,

Thank you. I am sure we will be adding several new REMS Echolight scan sites in the USA as time goes by. I followed your link, and did not see anything about the scans. However, I saw a post dated March 3 on OsteoStrong Boise's Facebook page:
"We now offer a non-radiation bone density scan with fragility score at OsteoStrong on Fridays! The only one of it’s kind in Idaho."
"Did you know you can book Echolight at your office/studio/clinic? Give us a call for more details. (208)331-4072."

Please understand that I am not endorsing OsteoStrong's osteogenic loading equipment because I have never used it.

To Anonymous of 3/26/2024,

The clinical efficacy of strontium ranelate has been demonstrated with a fracture risk reduction for postmenopausal women by 41% in vertebral fractures, 16% in nonvertebral fractures, and 36% in hip fractures after 3 years of strontium ranelate treatment in the studies of the Spinal Osteoporosis Therapeutic Intervention (SOTI) and the Treatment of Peripheral Osteoporosis (TROPOS).

TROPOS study:
"In the entire sample (5091 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis), relative risk (RR) was reduced by 16% for all nonvertebral fractures (P = 0.04), and by 19% for major fragility fractures (hip, wrist, pelvis and sacrum, ribs and sternum, clavicle, humerus) (P = 0.031) in strontium ranelate-treated patients in comparison with the placebo group. Among women at high risk of hip fracture (age > or = 74 yr and femoral neck bone mineral density T score < or = -3, corresponding to -2.4 according to NHANES reference) (n = 1977), the RR reduction for hip fracture was 36% (P = 0.046). RR of vertebral fractures was reduced by 39% (P < 0.001) in the 3640 patients with spinal x-rays and by 45% in the subgroup without prevalent vertebral fracture." https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15728210/

In the Combination of Micronutrients for Bone (COMB) and Melatonin-Micronutrients Osteopenia Treatment (MOTS) studies no fractures occurred after one year of taking strontium citrate in combination with other supplements.

How Strontium Builds Bones

Strontium is a mineral that tends to accumulate in bone. Studies have shown that oral doses of strontium are a safe and effective way to prevent and reverse osteoporosis. Doses of 680 mg per day appear to be optimal. See my "For More Information About Strontium" links section.

Osteoporosis is caused by changes in bone production. In healthy young bones there is a constant cycle of new bone growth and bone removal. With age, more bone is removed and less new bone is produced. The bones become less dense and thus more fragile.

Scientists believe that strontium works in two ways. It may stimulate the replication of pre-osteoblasts, leading to an increase in osteoblasts (cells that build bone). Strontium also directly inhibits the activity of osteoclasts (cells that break down bone). The result is stronger bones.

When taking strontium, be sure to take 1200 mg calcium, 1000 IU vitamin D3, and 500 mg magnesium daily. It is best to take strontium late at night on an empty stomach. Calcium and strontium may compete with each other for absorption if taken together.
