Be careful about the strontium supplement you choose. They are not all the same. The optimum dose is 680 mg elemental strontium daily. One study found that three out of five products tested contained significantly less strontium than their labels indicated. The two properly labeled products were AOR Strontium Support and Strontium Bone Maker. The information from the study came from

WELCOME TO STRONTIUM FOR BONES BLOG
Have you experienced negative, and even dangerous, side effects from Fosamax (alendronate), Boniva (ibandronate), Actonel (risedronate), Reclast (zoledronic acid), Prolia (denosumab), Forteo (teriparatide), Tymlos (abaloparatide), or other drugs prescribed for osteoporosis? If you have, then rest assured there is a safe, effective treatment for this condition. Strontium, primarily in the form of strontium citrate, is taken orally once a day.

How Strontium Builds Bones
Strontium is a mineral that tends to accumulate in bone. Studies have shown that oral doses of strontium are a safe and effective way to prevent and reverse osteoporosis. Doses of 680 mg per day appear to be optimal. See my "For More Information About Strontium" links section.
Osteoporosis is caused by changes in bone production. In healthy young bones there is a constant cycle of new bone growth and bone removal. With age, more bone is removed and less new bone is produced. The bones become less dense and thus more fragile.
Scientists believe that strontium works in two ways. It may stimulate the replication of pre-osteoblasts, leading to an increase in osteoblasts (cells that build bone). Strontium also directly inhibits the activity of osteoclasts (cells that break down bone). The result is stronger bones.
When taking strontium, be sure to take 1200 mg calcium, 1000 IU vitamin D3, and 500 mg magnesium daily. It is best to take strontium late at night on an empty stomach. Calcium and strontium may compete with each other for absorption if taken together.

I have a question about when to take strontium.I have read to take it on an empty stomach, and I have read to take it with food. Which is best?I have been on Fosomax and have seen some improvement in my spine but I don't like the way I it makes me feel or the way it works.
Thanks in advance.

Strontium is best taken on an empty stomach. Take it at least two hours away from meals and any supplements containing calcium or magnesium. Taking it this way will give you the best absorption.
Wishing you the best of luck.
I take Actonel once a week. I also have been taking Strontium citrate every day. When I stopped the Actonel for a year and just took the strontium, my bone density decreased. But I am taking 250mg twice a day with meals.
Can I take both Actonel and strontium for the best effect or do they cancel each other? Thanks,
To: Anonymous poster of 09/02/2010:
You said you are taking 250 mg strontium twice a day with meals. For best absorption, you should take strontium on an empty stomach, at least two hours away from meals or calcium or magnesium supplements. You may just not be absorbing enough strontium.
Also, you did not mention what brand you are taking. As my post stated, not all brands are worth taking. Some may not have the amount of strontium stated on the label. Others use strontium salts that are not as easy to assimilate. For example strontium citrate is absorbed better than strontium carbonate. Assuming you meant 500 mg elemental strontium, that is still a little shy of the recommended 680 mg per day.
I have read about people who claimed to take both a bisphosphonate and strontium for a while and their bone density increased. However, there are have been no clinical tests to validate those claims. Therefore, currently, no one knows for sure if you can take Actonel and strontium concurrently for the best effect or if they work against each other. Dr. Wright thinks they work against each other because the bisphosphonates inhibit the osteoclasts. Strontium stimulates the osteoblasts and inhibits the osteoclasts in a balanced manner to promote new bone formation. Taking both could throw this balance off kilter. This is just a theory.
I am taking Strontium Citrate - purchased from Beyond A Century in Maine (in powder form). You have said that not all strontium citrate is the same quality.
How can I check on the quality I am taking?
Thank you for your hellp.

Beyond A Century, Inc. is a small, family-owned company that purchases bulk items from suppliers and rebottles its private-labeled powders on site. Ask Beyond A Century for a certificate of analysis. The certificate will include the strontium content, other chemical and physical data, and a microbiological analysis of the strontium citrate powder.
Nothing there. Do you have an updated link?

Which form of Calcium do you prefer?
To Anonymous of March 6, 2017,
If you’ll read, “My Daily Supplements Update,” you’ll see that I take one tablet daily of Country Life, Gluten Free, Calcium Magnesium Complex (500 mg Ca, 250 mg Mg per tablet).
http://strontiumforbones.blogspot.com/2016/12/my-daily-supplements-update.html
It provides calcium as calcium hydroxyapatite, citrate, aspartate, alpha-ketoglutarate, and lysinate and magnesium as magnesium oxide, citrate, aspartate, taurinate, and alpha-ketoglutarate. It provides phosphorus as calcium hydroxyapatite. It is made with specific, free-form amino acids and uses a calcium:phosphorus and calcium:magnesium ratio of 2:1 to maximize calcium utilization. An amino acid chelated mineral is one in which a mineral has been chemically attached to an amino acid, and there is evidence that such compounds may improve mineral absorption.

Calcium citrate is another good source of calcium. The combination of calcium citrate plus vitamin D should increase calcium absorption. Even calcium carbonate is OK, if taken with food to increase absorption.
